O primeiro Por que ouvir de 2015 com uma resenha de 2015 é tão especial que eu, que sempre tenho resposta pra tudo, estou sem palavras! Resumindo a história, a vida me levou a conhecer os suíços do Comaniac, e da breve amizade nasceu a chance de ouvir o álbum de estreia da banda, o Return To The Wasteland, que vai ser lançado no próximo dia 27.
Assim não só nasceu a resenha que começa agora, como também a primeira resenha em inglês da história do Hardmetal Brasil. Respire fundo, estale o pescoço, os dedos e se prepare para conhecer o thrash metal que o Comaniac tem a oferecer.
Por que ouvir Return To The Wasteland?
Porque apesar de ser novato (3 anos de estrada), o Comaniac convence e espanta as fantasmas típicos do álbum de estreia: causar boa primeira impressão, pois sim, a primeira impressão não é definitiva, porém é muito importante; saber equilibrar o próprio som e as inspirações, pois quantas vezes você já ouviu bandas novatas mais parecendo bandas cover, embora não fossem?; e a postura dos músicos durante as 10 músicas, que vale um parágrafo à parte.
O Comaniac não brinca na condução das músicas. Ao contrário, encaram a missão com seriedade, sem a ideia de ah, no próximo álbum vamos melhorar isso. Não. Os suíços já chegam empolgados, exibindo peso e velocidade que lembram o Metallica das antigas, além de vocais ao estilo Exodus. A mistura é boa e interessante, porque essa fórmula de som é seguida há décadas, mas no caso dos suíços soa fresca, méritos dos diversos elementos groove que aparecem lá e cá, e das melodias mais soltas, alternando com a correria thrash.
Vocais: a cereja do bolo
As guitarras de Return To The Wasteland são nervosas. Não faltam riffs matadores e bem trabalhados, linhas de baixo consistentes e uma bateria frenética, tal como se espera de um bom álbum de thrash metal. Disso eu não tenho o que reclamar, só elogiar e recomendar a você que preste atenção, tem muita coisa boa pra bater cabeça.
Agora o que me chamou a atenção entre tudo isso foram os vocais. Jonas Schmid é um vocalista agressivo, tem timbre rasgado e é razoavelmente versátil, ideal para cantar as letras que abordam injustiças sociais, exploração e manipulação. Entretanto, ele também não faz tudo sozinho. O backing vocal do guitarrista Dominic Blum e do baixista Raymond Weibel são fundamentais para dar aquele puch extra, deixando as músicas mais encorpadas.
Elogio técnico, porém relevante para a arte da capa. Gostei bastante. O trabalho de Jan Yrlung tem cores vibrantes, desenho objetivo, sem aquelas maluquices que às vezes (sempre) aparecem por aí, e que combina com a proposta de som do Comaniac.

"Secret Seed": essa faixa tem a performance vocal que eu mais gosto, principalmente no refrão. Aqui os back vocais desempenham um papel fundamental de criar aquela atmosfera que vai chamar a galera pra cantar junto e bater cabeça nos shows;
"Solitude": a sacada aqui é ter logo no começo breves linhas de baixo bem fáceis de ouvir, uma das coisas que eu adoro. Do começo ao fim a música é corrida, baseada numa performance muito sólida dos músicos, o tipo de música que gruda fácil na memória;
"...And There Is No Job": a introdução sombria é muito boa. Logo a melodia explode em guitarras que seguem um ritmo gostoso de acompanhar. A música alterna bastante entre o heavy clássico e o thrash, mas as mudanças são encaixadas direitinho, então a música não perde a energia.
Conclusão
Return To The Wasteland é um álbum que equilibra de forma bem bacana o som do clássico com o novo, tem energia e não é enjoativo, um receio que eu confesso que tinha antes de ouvir o álbum pela primeira vez. Não sou a ouvinte mais fiel de thrash metal, mas o Comaniac não só conseguiu cativar a minha atenção com músicas produzidas na medida, sem frescuras ou muito pobres.
O álbum tem tamanho padrão, 10 faixas, reto e objetivo, ideal principalmente para você que gostar de Metallica, Exodus e Overkill. Algumas músicas tem duração razoável, entre 5 e 6 minutos, porém passam rápido, o que nesse caso é um elogio, pois você se deixa envolver pela vibe delas de maneira que não sente o tempo passar. Olho vivo nessa galera daqui pra frente, os suíços são bons.
Importante: para adquirir o álbum e incentivar a banda, você tem algumas formas. The first 2015 Why Listen with a review about an 2015 album is so special that I -who always have an answer for everything- am speechless! Summarizing the story, life led me to meet (virtually, but still) the Swiss from Comaniac and from the brief friendship I gained a chance to listen their debut album, Return To The Wasteland, which will be released on next 27th.
And that's how born not only the review that begins now, but also the first review fully written in english (the portuguese version you can read above) of the history of Hardmetal Brazil. Take a deep breath, crack your neck, your fingers and get ready to meet the thrash metal that Comaniac has to offer.
Why Listen Return To The Wasteland?
Because despite being a newcomer band with 3 years down the road, Comaniac can convince and scare away the typical ghosts that haunt any debut album:
1) Make a good first impression because yes, the first impression is not definitive, but it's very important;
2) Know how to balance their own music with the inspirations, because how many times have you heard bands sound more like cover bands, though they are not cover bands? (redundancy intended);
3) And the attitude of musicians during the 10 songs, that worth a separate paragraph.
When the thing is song conduction, Comaniac doesn't play. Instead, they face the task seriously, without ah, next album we will improve this and that spirit. No. The Swiss have already show us their excitement, their weight and speed that reminds to old Metallica and the Exodus vocal style. The mixture is good and interesting because this formula is known for decades, but their music still sounds fresh, merits of the various groove elements that appear here and there, and loose melodies, alternating with the fast moments.
Vocals: the icing on the cake
Return To The Wasteland guitars are nervous. There is no shortage of killer and well-crafted riffs, consistent bass lines and frantic drums, as is expected of a good thrash metal album. About this I have no complaints, only praise and recommendations for you to pay attention, because there's a lot of stuff to headbang to.
But what caught my attention between all this were the vocals. Jonas Schmid is an aggressive vocalist with harsh timbre and is fairly versatile, ideal to sing the lyrics that address social injustice, exploitation and manipulation. However, he doesn't do everything alone. The backing vocals of Dominic Blum (guitar) and Raymond Weibel (bass) are fundamental to give that extra punch, making the songs more full-bodied.
Technical, but relevant praise to the cover art. I really liked it. Jan Yrlung work has vibrant colors, is clean and without those crazy things that sometimes (or-almost-always) appear over here (in which here = metal scene), fitting with the band's sound style.

"Solitude": the trick here is have brief bass lines playing at the very start of the song, the kind of lines that you can easily listen and also one of my favorite things. Catchy. From beginning to end the song is non stop, all based on the very strong performance of the musicians, the kind of song that sticks into your memory without much effort;
"...And There Is No Job": the sort of gloomy introduction is very good. Soon the melody bursts into guitars playing a nice rhythm to follow. The music quite alternates between classic and thrash metal, but the changes are well built, so there's no loss of energy.
Conclusion
Return To The Wasteland succeeds in keep the balance between classic and new sound, has power and is not cloying, a fear that must I confess that I had before listen the songs for the first time. I'm not the most frequent thrash metal listener, but Comaniac managed to captivate my attention with songs nicely produced, no excessive frills or poor choices.
As I already said, the album has a standard size: straight and objective 10 tracks, good for Metallica, Exodus and/or Overkill fans. Some songs have reasonable length, from 5 to 6 minutes, but they flow fast, which in this case is a compliment because you feel involved in a way that doesn't let you feel the time pass. Keen eye in these guys from now on.. The Swiss are good.
