A banda foi formada em 1996 com Robert Westerholt na guitarra e Sharon den Adel (dona de creche hoje em dia) no vocal. Junta-se a eles Jeroen Van Veen no baixo, Martijn Westerholt no teclado e Michiel Papenhoeve formando dupla na guitarra e Ivar de Graaf na bateria.

Popularmente rotulada como Metal Sinfônico com Gothic Metal, Sharon define a banda como rock sinfônico com várias influencias. Hoje a formaçaão da banda é: Sharon no vocal, Robert na guitarra, Ruud Adrianus Jolie formando dupla na guitarra, Jeroen no baixo, Martijn no teclado e Mike Coolen na bateria.
